Agni literally means fire. In Ayurveda, Agni is the digestive and metabolic "fire" that transforms food into a form of energy that our body needs. Agni helps various tissues of the body to produce secretions, metabolic reactions, and other processes needed to create energy. Agni helps maintaining nutrition and excretion at cellular level.

Agni is a biological fire that governs metabolism. Therefore Digestive abilities depend upon the strength of Agni.

Poor and imbalanced Agni produces toxins (Ama) in the body. That is the main reason of Chronic Disorders. A balanced Agni therefore is vital for health. The strength of the body to resist disease and also its physical strength are directly related to its metabolic processes. Disturbed Agni is usually the chief causes of diseases.

Food consumed will not provide good health unless it is digested properly, even if the food is pure and of high quality. In the modern world people are more concerned about vitamins and protein rich food instead keeping their Agni balanced.

There are thirteen types of Agni in the body. The most important of them is the Jatharagni, the gastric fire, responsible for digesting food. If digestive Agni is low and the capacity is impaired, one may experience pain, discomfort, feeling of heaviness or gases gurgling, constipation or loose stools. That ultimately leads to various chronic disorders, low energy and poor immunity.

Thus it is of utmost importance to keep Agni in its balanced state in order to achieve perfect health.

There are two main factors that contribute to health. First is the physical food one eats, digest, and assimilate. The second is mind food what one consumes through mind-body. For example what we see, hear, taste, smell, feel, and think.

Balanced food and balanced Agni is key to health.
